    A ubiquitous learning approach on robotics

    Ubiquitous learning refers to the integration of learning processes with everyday environments and activities using technology. By leveraging ubiquitous learning principles in the field of robotics, we can foster an immersive and interactive learning environment that promotes continuous learning and knowledge acquisition. This paper presents an in-depth exploration of a ubiquitous learning approach for robotics with the aim to enhance the educational experiences and capabilities of robotic systems. Furthermore, it explores the potential benefits and challenges of ubiquitous learning in the field of robotics, such as increased adaptability, personalized learning experiences, and the development of lifelong learning skills.     Establishing a Baseline for Human Cortical Folding Morphological Variables: A Multisite Study

    Differences in the way human cerebral cortices fold have been correlated to health, disease, development, and aging. However, to obtain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that generate such differences, it is useful to derive one's morphometric variables from the first principles. This study explores one such set of variables that arise naturally from a model for universal self-similar cortical folding that was validated on comparative neuroanatomical data. We aim to establish a baseline for these variables across the human lifespan using a heterogeneous compilation of cross-sectional datasets as the first step to extending the model to incorporate the time evolution of brain morphology. We extracted the morphological features from structural MRI of 3,650 subjects: 3,095 healthy controls (CTL) and 555 patients with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) from 9 datasets, which were harmonized with a straightforward procedure to reduce the uncertainty due to heterogeneous acquisition and processing. The unprecedented possibility of analyzing such a large number of subjects in this framework allowed us to compare CTL and AD subjects' lifespan trajectories, testing if AD is a form of accelerated aging at the brain structural level. After validating this baseline from development to aging, we estimate the variables' uncertainties and show that Alzheimer's Disease is similar to premature aging when measuring global and local degeneration. This new methodology may allow future studies to explore the structural transition between healthy and pathological aging and may be essential to generate data for the cortical folding process simulations

    Innate immunity induced by Plasmodium liver infection inhibits malaria reinfections

The authors have paid a fee to allow immediate free access to this article.Following transmission through a mosquito bite to the mammalian host, Plasmodium parasites first invade and replicate inside hepatocytes before infecting erythrocytes and causing malaria. The mechanisms limiting Plasmodium reinfections in humans living in regions of malaria endemicity have mainly been explored by studying the resistance induced by the blood stage of infection. However, epidemiologic studies have suggested that in high-transmission areas, preerythrocytic stages also activate host resistance to reinfection. This, along with the recent discovery that liver infections trigger a specific and effective type I interferon (IFN) response, prompted us to hypothesize that this pre-erythrocyte-stage-induced resistance is linked to liver innate immunity. Here, we combined experimental approaches and mathematical modeling to recapitulate field studies and understand the molecular basis behind such resistance. We present a newly established mouse reinfection model and demonstrate that rodent malaria liver-stage infection inhibits reinfection. This protection relies on the activation of innate immunity and involves the type I IFN response and the antimicrobial cytokine gamma IFN (IFN-γ). Importantly, mathematical simulations indicate that the predictions based on our experimental murine reinfection model fit available epidemiological data.     GRUPO DE GESTANTES E CASAIS GRÁVIDOS: PARCERIA DO DEPARTAMENTO DE ENFERMAGEM E HOSPITAL UNIVERSITÁRIO/ UFSC

    Relato de experiência sobre as atividades desenvolvidas no grupo de Gestantes e Casais Grávidos. È um projeto de extensão, gratuito e educativo, realizado desde de 1996, dirigido às gestantes e acompanhantes. Coordenado por docentes do Departamento de Enfermagem da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, psicóloga do Hospital Universitário e educadora perinatal. Os encontros de cada grupo são realizados semanalmente no Núcleo de Capacitação Técnica durante oito semanas, sendo constituídos de três grandes momentos: conscientização corporal, relaxamento e respiração, lanche e tematização. Os temas são definidos pelos participantes abrangem a gravidez, o aleitamento, a alimentação, parto, pós-parto, cuidados com o bebê e formação da nova família. Esses e os subtemas que divergem em cada grupo são refletidos e problematizados coletivamente. No último encontro é realizada a visita à maternidade. Nesses 17 anos, 68 grupos foram realizados, com a presença de 1294 gestantes, 751 acompanhantes, alunos de graduação de enfermagem, psicologia, odontologia, de educação física, mestrandas de enfermagem e profissionais de saúde. O Grupo de Gestantes tem sido um campo de formação acadêmica, sendo um espaço para o ensino-aprendizagem. Busca, sobretudo, ampliar o espaço de troca, de interação e de comunicação com a com as gestantes e s acompanhantes, para que possam melhor compreender o processo de nascimento e o papel da mulher e do homem como protagonistas da gestação, parto e pós-parto, preparando-os para a maternidade e paternidade

    Changes in cortisol but not in brain-derived neurotrophic factor modulate the association between sleep disturbances and major depression

    Sleep disturbance is a symptom consistently found in major depression and is associated with a longer course of illness, reduced response to treatment, increased risk of relapse and recurrence. Chronic insomnia has been associated with changes in cortisol and serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels, which in turn are also changed in major depression. Here, we evaluated the relationship between sleep quality, salivary cortisol awakening response (CAR), and serum BDNF levels in patients with sleep disturbance and treatment-resistant major depression (n = 18), and in a control group of healthy subjects with good (n = 21) and poor (n = 18) sleep quality. We observed that the patients had the lowest CAR and sleep duration of all three groups and a higher latency to sleep than the healthy volunteers with a good sleep profile. Besides, low CAR was correlated with more severe depressive symptoms and worse sleep quality. There was no difference in serum BDNF levels between groups with distinct sleep quality. Taken together, our results showed a relationship between changes in CAR and in sleep quality in patients with treatment-resistant depression, which were correlated with the severity of disease, suggesting that cortisol could be a physiological link between sleep disturbance and major depression

    Comparison of zinc oxide nanoparticle integration into non-woven fabrics using different functionalisation methods for prospective application as active facemasks

    The development of advanced facemasks stands out as a paramount priority in enhancing healthcare preparedness. In this work, different polypropylene non-woven fabrics (NWF) were characterised regarding their structural, physicochemical and comfort-related properties. The selected NWF for the intermediate layer was functionalised with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) 0.3 and 1.2wt% using three different methods: electrospinning, dip-pad-dry and exhaustion. After the confirmation of ZnO NP content and distribution within the textile fibres by morphological and chemical analysis, the samples were evaluated regarding their antimicrobial properties. The functionalised fabrics obtained via dip-pad-dry unveiled the most promising data, with 0.017 ± 0.013wt% ZnO NPs being mostly located at the fibre’s surface and capable of total eradication of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli colonies within the tested 24 h (ISO 22196 standard), as well as significantly contributing (**** p < 0.0001) to the growth inhibition of the bacteriophage MS2, a surrogate of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (ISO 18184 standard). A three-layered structure was assembled and thermoformed to obtain facemasks combining the previously chosen NWF, and its resulting antimicrobial capacity, filtration efficiency and breathability (NP EN ISO 149) were assessed.     Functional Characterization of an Aspergillus fumigatus Calcium Transporter (PmcA) that Is Essential for Fungal Infection

    Aspergillus fumigatus is a primary and opportunistic pathogen, as well as a major allergen, of mammals. The Ca+2-calcineurin pathway affects virulence, morphogenesis and antifungal drug action in A. fumigatus. Here, we investigated three components of the A. fumigatus Ca+2-calcineurin pathway, pmcA,-B, and -C, which encode calcium transporters. We demonstrated that CrzA can directly control the mRNA accumulation of the pmcA-C genes by binding to their promoter regions. CrzA-binding experiments suggested that the 5′-CACAGCCAC-3′ and 5′-CCCTGCCCC-3′ sequences upstream of pmcA and pmcC genes, respectively, are possible calcineurin-dependent response elements (CDREs)-like consensus motifs. Null mutants were constructed for pmcA and -B and a conditional mutant for pmcC demonstrating pmcC is an essential gene. The ΔpmcA and ΔpmcB mutants were more sensitive to calcium and resistant to manganese and cyclosporin was able to modulate the sensitivity or resistance of these mutants to these salts, supporting the interaction between calcineurin and the function of these transporters. The pmcA-C genes have decreased mRNA abundance into the alveoli in the ΔcalA and ΔcrzA mutant strains. However, only the A. fumigatus ΔpmcA was avirulent in the murine model of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis
